HTC EVO 3D – OTA Update And 3D Games Galore

This is the promised (and much delayed) video of the recent OTA update from HTC, for European unbranded HTC EVO 3D’s. The OTA update installs 3 3D games; “Ultimate Spider-Man Total Mayhem 3D,” “Need For Speed, Shift 3D” and “The Sims 3D”  – and apparently also includes an important security update. I originally blogged about this update here: http://goo.gl/zAyMl.

Chances are that by now most EVO 3D owners already have this update (or found it was already installed on recently purchased EVO 3D’s), but just in case anyone hasn’t received the update or is considering buying this phone and wants to see what 3D content is available for it – I thought I would still post this vid. 🙂

HTC EVO 3D Display – Are 3D Phones Dimmer?

Hi all. This video should really be in two parts. First off I’ll be looking at whether or not there is a trade off in brightness with 3D screens. After that I’ll be answering a viewers query and showing you how you can install the “Amazing Sense” skin that you see here on my phone. This is directly in answer to a query from”Ghostsnoopy3.” You can find the link to the XDA page where you can download the “Amazing Sense” skin at the bottom of this text.

In the first part of the video I hope viewers can help me out with something – in my unboxing vid of the HTC EVO 3D the first thing I noticed was that the screen seemed a little dimmer to me than on my HTC Sensation. This is a bit of a worry as the 2 phones have exactly the same display screen specs.

Of course I was thinking that it could be just my imagination – or that it could be due to the 3D technology. However I haven’t been able to find anything that confirms that 3D screens are dimmer. So take a look and see if you can notice the difference in displays – let me know if you think this is an issue – and if you do know anything regarding discrepancies with 3D screens of this type I’d be grateful if you could let me know.

Thanks.

Gadgemeister.

HTC EVO 3D/Android – All Your Battery Questions Answered

*****I’ve had real technical problems lately with editing and uploading videos – so apologies for promising lots of EVO vids and not delivering.*****

I’ve been wanting to do a video on mobile phone battery life issues for some time. I think the biggest drawback with some of the best and highest spec smartphones is that you can’t be sure it’s gonna even get you through a full days usage.

This can end up with your phone going kaput on you (probably when you most need it), or on you having to use your phone’s settings to limit what it will do (and what you can do with it) – thereby reducing it’s power consumption (but also severely limiting its performance), until you can reach somewhere that you can charge it. This is not really acceptable is it?! What’s the point in paying £500 for a phone that can do everything – if you have to then limit what it can do half the time – just so it doesn’t die on you?!

Unfortunately this continues to be a problem due to phone makers current obsession with thin-ness (thanks iphone!)

So what solutions are there out there? Well, I was surprised to find that there are plenty of  inexpensive solutions to the problem – but none of them come without compromise.

We shouldn’t have to make such compromises –

A plea – MOBILE PHONE MAKERS, PLEASE JUST MAKE PHONES CONTAINING BATTERIES THAT WILL BE PRETTY SURE OF GETTING EVEN HEAVY USERS COMFORTABLY THROUGH THE WHOLE DAY!!!!!

I mean seriously, it’s not too much to ask is it? Cue video:

HTC EVO 3D Unboxing Part 2 – First Impressions

This is the rest of the unboxing video that I was able to salvage after having technical problems. Apologies for the lack of in depth review in this video. More vids featuring the HTC EVO 3D will follow from tomorrow.

HTC EVO 3D Unboxing (Sim Free, Unbranded, Unlocked)

Apologies all, for delays in posting this vid. However I can promise that follow-up vids will be coming thick and fast as there is plenty to look at and comment about with this phone. This vid will totally just be the actual unboxing, but the next vid will post today or tomorrow, and I will try to post more on this phone every day or 2 for a while after that.

Verdict so far – it’s a great and impressive phone – but is perhaps let down just a little bit in some important respects. The 3D is VERY impressive but there’s probably not a great deal of use for it as yet, apart from perhaps 3D gaming (I’m not that much of a gamer but I’d definitely like to try 3D games on this). Is 3D a gimmick? Maybe, but a fun one – and definitely something to impress curious friends with. I’m also a little annoyed by the lack of 3D content out there. There are plenty of YouTube videos (which are great), but I can’t find any of the 3D games that are available in the States.

*****If anyone can tell me where I can find some, or other 3D content I’d be very grateful for any tips*****

*****Update 23/08/2011, 14:03 UK time: News on the lack of 3D games available: this French site:http://bit.ly/mXcIQL claims that HTC are about to address this issue with an update that will add these 3 games to your HTC EVO 3D; ‘The Sims 3’ (or should that be ‘Sims 3D’), ‘Spider-Man Total Mayhem,’ and ‘Need For Speed.’ Let’s hope they’re right about this (not been able to find it elsewhere – but this site is uber-reliable for breaking HTC news). And let’s hope that HTC get this out REAL soon.*****

HTC Sensation OTA Update Gave Me Deathgrip? Not really but… – Part 1

In response to a comment on my YouTube channel, I started playing around with my WiFi etc on my HTC Sensation and noticed something curious indeed!Watch the accompanying video (Part 2 on it’s way), to see what I discovered.

P.S. I’m sure the fact that I only discovered this straight after the OTA update is purely coincidental – but it did get me wondering at first.

HTC Sensation OTA Software Update

An Over The Air software update has been released for the HTC Sensation (see vid above). Not sure what it entails – probably just bug fixes etc – but I will Try to find out if there is anything else to report on this update.

To update your phone just go to <menu>, <settings>, <about phone>, <software updates>.

Please check back here as I will post further info about this update later today, and as I find out more in the future.

****07/07/2011 – 15:39 GMT – update: Found some more info on the update. Looks like it contains bug fixes and improvements to performance and power management/battery life as well as other things. See here for brief overview, or here for a more detailed rundown. Also – looks like the update is rolling out, and so far has only been issued for unlocked, unbranded European phones. So if you’re on a particular network contract and can’t find the update – that’s why.****

Cheers,

Gadgemeister.

HTC Sensation Deathgrip? – My Arse!

Ok, so a little while ago videos started popping up on the internet seemingly demonstrating an issue with the new HTC Sensation mobile phone.  (Couple examples of the vids here and here).  The issue was apparently similar to the problems experienced by users of the iphone 4 when it was launched (the infamous iphone 4 Deathgrip!) – except this time, the problems were even worse – as with the Sensation the “fault” was reported as cutting out not only the voice signal but the WiFi and Bluetooth signals too.

Needless to say, as someone that had been eagerly awaiting the release of the all singing, all dancing, new wonderphone from HTC, these videos were a serious point of contention in my plans to acquire a new bit of gadge!  I was seriously crestfallen that I was gonna be denied the new toy that I’d been looking forward to for so long – or that I’d get it, only to be disappointed like all those poor iphoney’s before me.

Still, as there hadn’t been much follow-up publicity about the issue by the time the unbranded unlocked version landed, I decided to take the plunge and buy the beast.  But even as I unpacked my new bundle of joy I was harbouring nervous doubts – wondering if I was about to be throwing the thing  – maddened by the curse of the “Deathgrip” – my hopes of gadget joy dashed along with my phone against the wall.  So, were my fears unfounded? see my vid for the answer (although you’ve probably already guessed).

P.S. The mobile voice signal fluctuating around 2 bars is normal when I’m here at home. Actual calls are still crystal clear though.

Thanks for watching.
